After initial certification, all continuing education must be completed between the following January 1 and the application deadline date for renewal, i.e., September 15, five years later.
For subsequent certification periods, all continuing education must be completed between the day after the application deadline date (i.e., September 16) and the application deadline date for renewal, i.e., September 15, five years later.
Continuing education hours may be completed any time during the periods listed above. All continuing education hours must be completed by the application deadline date for renewal of certification by continuing education.
Yes. The Certification Examination will still be available as a recertification option.
Yes. There is a separate deadline for the renewal of certification by continuing education option, along with extended and late deadlines (see current Handbook for full details). All continuing education hours must be completed and submitted with the application by the chosen deadline date. Deadlines for the Certification Examinations will continue to be mid-January for the spring examination and mid-July for the fall examination.
Yes, but after the spring examination only. Current CDEs who choose to take the spring examination and do not pass may apply for renewal of certification by continuing education by the appropriate deadline date. This answer is applicable for the CDE who can document meeting the renewal practice requirement upon application and all other pertinent requirements. In the event a CDE cannot document meeting the renewal practice requirement upon application, she will need to document 75 hours of approved continuing education activities as well as passing the Examination. NOTE: This ability to "switch" does not apply to any individual who has let their CDE credential lapse.
If your credential has expired, you will have to take and pass the Certification Examination to reinstate your certification. Effective 2010, an individual who has let their credential expire may take either of the certification examinations (spring and/or fall) in the year immediately following expiration without having to meet the requirements for initial certification. This answer is applicable for the individual who can document meeting the renewal practice requirement upon application and all other pertinent requirements. In the event an individual cannot document meeting the renewal practice requirement upon application, she will need to document 75 hours of approved continuing education activities as well as pass the Examination to reinstate her certification.

Yes. All continuing education descriptions must contain a statement regarding the provider. Check the NCBDE list of recognized providers (List of Recognized Providers) to determine if the continuing education activity is being offered by a provider on the list.
NCBDE does not approve continuing education activities. To satisfy the requirement for renewal of certification by continuing education, the continuing education activity applicable to diabetes must be approved by one of the providers on the NCBDE list (List of Recognized Providers).
Continuing education activities need not be discipline specific, however, all continuing education activities must be applicable to diabetes.
To determine if the continuing education is applicable to diabetes, the subject matter must appear on the Certification Examination Content Outline. The Content Outline is published in the Certification Handbook, and is available on the web site (Examination Content Outline).
