Renewal of certification must be completed during the calendar year in which a CDE's certification expires. CDEs mayrenew either by continuing education (Continuing Education Details) or by taking the examination (Examination Details).
Certification renewal demonstrates that professionals previously certified have maintained a level of contemporary knowledge in diabetes education. NCBDE requires all CDEs recertify every 5 years to maintain certification status. It is the responsibility of each CDE to stay abreast of changes in certification and/or renewal requirements and to recertify in a timely manner. Valid dates of the credential should be monitored and application for renewal submitted by published deadlines. Extensions of certification are not granted.
Renewal of certification by continuing education requires that CDEs complete 75 clock hours of continuing education in content areas applicable to diabetes during the certification cycle. Implementation of this plan on a prorated basis requires that CDEs whose credentials will expire on 12/31/2008 must complete 60 clock hours of approved continuing education. Continuing education activities completed between January 1, 2004 and the September 2008 deadline may be counted, provided they are completed at the time of application and the application is postmarked by the published deadline date. Those who opt to use the late deadline date must understand that the extended date applies only to submitting the application, it does not apply to completion of continuing education activities.
The individual who fails to renew her CDE credential prior to its expiration date may not use the CDE designation as a credential following her name, or otherwise as a certification mark, nor may she represent herself in any way as a Certified Diabetes Educator.
The NCBDE Board of Directors has approved a change in requirements for renewal of certification. Beginning in 2010 (formerly 2009), individuals will need to document a minimum of 1000 hours of professional practice experience in diabetes self-management education at the time of application for renewal of certification. Individuals will still be able to choose whether renewal of certification will be completed using the continuing education option or by taking the Certification Examination. View practice requirement details.
Must continue to hold the license or registration for the same discipline held at the time of initial certification. This license or registration must be current, active, and unrestricted at the time of renewal.
Renewal of Certification: $250.00. Note: For individuals whose credentials lapsed on or prior to 12/31/2007, $350.
Renewal of Certification Late Application Option (available only to currently certified individuals; individuals whose credentials lapsed on or prior to 12/31/2007 do not qualify for the late application option): $350.00
